Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking (CXL)

About Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking (CXL)

CXL is a scientifically proven treatment that uses a combination of ultraviolet (UV) light and vitamin B2 (riboflavin) eye drops to increase the stiffness and stability of the cornea. This procedure does not improve vision directly, but it helps stop further deterioration, especially in conditions like:

  • Keratoconus
  • Post-LASIK ectasia
  • Pellucid marginal degeneration

How it Works:

  • The surface layer of the cornea (epithelium) is either removed (epi-off) or kept intact (epi-on), depending on the method used.
  • Riboflavin drops are applied to the eye for a set duration.
  • The cornea is exposed to UV-A light, activating the riboflavin and forming new collagen bonds.

Benefits:

  • Stops progression of corneal thinning and bulging
  • Minimally invasive with no surgical cutting
  • Can delay or eliminate the need for corneal transplant
  • Safe for both adults and younger patients

Recovery and Expectations:

  • Mild discomfort for a few days after treatment
  • Visual improvement is gradual and may take a few months
  • Often combined with other procedures like topography-guided PRK for better outcomes

Who Should Consider CXL:

  • Diagnosed with early to moderate keratoconus
  • Experiencing progressive vision loss
  • Not suitable for refractive surgery like LASIK due to corneal instability

At our center, we use FDA-approved protocols and advanced CXL equipment to ensure high safety and effective outcomes. Our specialists will conduct a full corneal scan to confirm your eligibility before treatment.
